Islands - Vapours

The Canadian band's third album feels less harrowing than the previous, Arm's Way, and more poppy than their calypso influenced and ridiculously awesome first album , Return To The Sea.

The original drummer, J'Aime Thompson, returns for Vapours and although I can't put my finger on it, definitely adds something that was missing from Arm's Way.

Vapours is the most 'pop' Islands album yet, but still retains singer and songwriter Nick Thorburn's  lyrical paranoia tied to catchy melody.

Nick and J'Aime were both members of the The Unicorns who boasted a similar sound to Islands with more of what I will describe as a "punk mentality."

I'd rate Vapours above Arm's Way but still miss the sprawling caribbean-tinged sound of the first album.
